SMTIV’s main protonag is Flynn, a Samurai who protects the medieval Kingdom of Mikado. When someone named “The Black Samurai” starts attacking the population, Flynn and three other Samurai are sent to capture him/her. Following him underground, they come across the demon-controlled city of Tokyo. Flynn ends up at the center of a war between the demons of Tokyo and the angelic powers controlling Mikado. Shin Megami Tensei is a game for the Nintendo 3DS.
I’ve played quite a few Shin Megami games before, including the Persona series. Of course the persona series are spin-off games and I’ve noticed a lot of hatred between the fans of both series… Why? I’m liking the Persona series a little bit more at the moment but Shin Megami Tensi IV made me realize how much better the gameplay in the orginal games actually are. Don’t get me wrong though, I love the Persona style to death! But in the SMT series you have special ways to recruit the “demons”, you can negotiate with them… I just love the converstations you have with them, the child-like ones want treats, the girls want their special treatments ect.
This particular SMT game is not played in first-person, you control Flynn in a third-person view while you can see mirages of the demons apearing around you, you will need to attack them before they touch you to get an advantage in battle. You can change your equipment and looks to take more advantage of spells, and attack types.
I’ve also heard a lot of people not liking the story and characters, but I’ve been enjoying myself so far. But then again, I’ve liked other games with “meh” storylines like Fantasy Life for the Nintendo 3DS. Characters are really fun to interact with, and most of the game is fully voiced too! Even the demons. I also really liked the graphical style of this game so much more than the others I’ve played. Keep in mind that I’ve only played a handful of SMT games, the other 3DS game I’ve played before this was Soul Hackers which was a spin-off too if I am right.
Shin Megami Tensei IV has been released in America for quite a while. Europe had to wait a bit longer, about 2 weeks ago on October 30th the game has been released on the Nintendo eshop.
This review might seem a bit different than before, and you’re right. I’ve noticed I was mostly telling everyone what the game was about, instead of giving my personal optinion… and that is what a review is actually about.
I’m giving Shin Megami Tensei IV for the 3DS…
